Podcasts: What Are They and How To Promote Yourself With Them

Podcasts are a great way to get your music heard. Just in case you don’t know what a podcast is (which I have a hard time believing especially if you’re reading this blog post) it’s like a radio show that appeals to a specific audience. Instead of listening to it on the radio, you hear it on an MP3 player (it doesn’t have to be an iPod) or on your computer.

A podcast is pretty much just a blog that has an audio file with it.  By using a feed reader (there are plenty of them available free), anyone can ’subscribe’ to a podcast.  Yes, even one you create yourself.  But, did you know that there are popular podcasts that allow you to submit your songs for inclusion?  It’s a great way to get your music heard.

Here are the names of some of the most popular music podcasts at this time. We’ve listed the site’s url.  Even better, we’re listing the page that tells you how to submit your songs, as well.  For some reason which is probably beyond human comprehension, some of them have buried the submission page so almost no one can find it.  Just these few sites could take hours to navigate to find these pages.

KEXP: www.kexp.org Podcast Submission URL: http://kexp.org/programming/airplay.asp

Bands Under the Radar: www.bandsundertheradar.com submission info is on homepage (what do you know… someone got it right).

MPR: The Current Song of the day: http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/podcast/song_of_the_day/ webpage: http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/services/the_current/

XPN: http://xpn.org webpage: http://xpn.org/contact-xpn

Follow their instructions as closely as you can or you won’t stand a chance of getting airplay.  They can get pickier than my great aunt Hildegard about doing things just right.

Whatever you do, don’t get discouraged if you never hear back or your song doesn’t get played. Submit your song again. Things change quickly on the web and there will be new podcasts popping up. We here at Musicmarketingcenter will keep an eye out and post any new developments.
